Cold Working Project

At the beginning of the semester I attended the lecture and hot shop demonstration by Boyd Sugiki and Lisa Zerkotwitz. Boyd discussed many technical tips of blowing and shaping glass but the one thing that really stuck in my mind was his concept he termed “B.U.H.” which stands for “build up heat.” As an intro student with only a few classes of blowing as my background I was amazed at everything he did and tried to absorb all of the material and techniques he was dishing out. His demo really got me excited for the class and about glass as a medium in general!

Midterm Project

Final Project: Experimenting with Apples and Glass

Final Project Proposal

For my final project I decided to use the concept of iteration to create a sequence of varied interactions between apples and glass. I wish to experiment as much as possible and push myself to discover the most creative and interesting ways apples and glass can be combined. I want to test how each can affect the other based on the different methods I use. Most of the apples I plan to carve or peel so that they will dry out and remain preserved and I will take the apples in various drying stages and manipulate them with glass or vice versa. Some methods I want to experiment with are sealing a peeled apple in a blown form, dipping an apple in molten glass, piercing an apple with rods of glass and see what happens as the apple dries, drawing a pattern on an apple with hot glass to burn it, hollowing out an apple and pouring molten glass inside, swirling hot glass cane around an apple, make a glass/apple chain or connection using boro and flame working. My goal is to create as many variations of glass/apple interactions and try to find the most creative ways they can interact.

Mid-Term Project: Material Concept. Similarly how organic scribbles layer to create form in a drawing, I plan to use glass pieces to achieve the same effect in a 3D manner.

Mid-Term Project: Communication

My proposal for the mid-term project is to project a refusal of communication by depicting a realistic representation of a facial expression appearing defiant and stern. I will create this image using small pieces of organic shaped glass which will either be painted black, sand-blasted or left clear. The glass bits will be layered on top of each other and the layers as well as the paint or sand blasting will create the shading and form for the represented face. I plan to attach all the pieces together with glue or lay them inside a wooden frame to keep them in place.
